- ALAIOR INFORMATION -
Built around the old Ihalor hill,
from where it takes its name, the city was founded by King James II of
Mallorca in the year 1304. The Santa Eulalia Parrish, today's local
patron saint, already existed before.
The church, which crowns the roofs of the houses, is the first image one gets on arriving at Alaior. The building's structure was rebuilt in the 17th century, inspired by Baroque. From this point, one can access the street that leads to Munt l'Angel Park, an elevated place serving as a magnificent watch point over the natural surroundings. Alaior hides many architectonical surprises, sites worth not missing such as the Rosario Chapel (Capilla del Rosario) located in the inside of Santa Eulália Church, as well as the San Pedro arcade and its exit. The Sa Lluna patio, an old Franciscan cloister, Can Salort Palace, an example of civil architecture sign of wealthy families (currently owned by the local authority) are samples of cultural proposals, to end up at Ermita de Sant Pere and its park with trees where one can take a break after so many places to see. Other sites of ethnological interest are the windmills surrounding the town: D'en John Mill, D'en Pujol Mill.or the wells which are still preserved within the urban layout. And, to finish the tour, nothing better than its medieval streets, which will show us the city secrets. The best options to learn about Alaior's cultural reality are the cultural centres of Rotger or San Diego. Alaior is the birthplace of the worldwide known Minorcan Cheese (Queso de Menorca) as well as the homemade sausages, ice creams, pastries and liquors, shoe manufacturers and fashion jewellery. These items can be purchased at the factories, as they all have their own shops. The countryside pathways are an offer to carry out several trekking excursions or bike rides, such as the route that leads from the Ermita de San Llorenç to Binixems. |
