City that arose when in year 884 count
Diego Porcelos repobló the zone. Fernán González in the 931
elevated it to the category of ' caput Castiellaé. With Fernando I
in 1035 one becomes capital of the kingdom of Castile and with
Alfonso I El Sabio receives a greater impulse when episcopal
host constituting it. Until s. XV it acquires great importance, in the
middle of the XVI the transfer from the cut to Madrid and the
crisis of the lanero commerce causes the decay of the city, that extends
until s. XVIII. The travelling ones arrived at the city by the street of
the Roads, before crossing the wall, were with the hospital of San
Juan, created in s. XI by Alfonso I El Sabio next to the
church of San Lesmes. It is a gothic work of s. XIV.
San Lesmes was a French travelling
nobleman of the s. XI that was based in the city and dedicated its life
to protect to the travelling ones. The cathedral is the most important
monument of the city, its construction began in 1221 on a previous
temple, Romanesque, its promoters were Fernando III and
Mauricio bishop, in the construction was adopted cánones of the
cathedrals of the north of France. Although the temple was
devoted in 1260, took several forever in finishing works more.
It has Latin cross plant, with three ships,
cruise, girola and chapels absidiales. In front of the seat of Santa
Maria the main facade rises, framed by two towers of 84 meters of height,
crowned by needles of octogonal base, work of Juan of Colony
(1445-1458). The North facade, or of the Coronería, s. XIII, has
importanes escultóricos groups. Also to the north is the one of the
Pellejería, plateresca of Francisco of Colony (1516). To the
south the door of the Sarmental, of s. XIII, is a work of the
plus purto gothic French. Under the cruise are the tombs of the Cid and
their wife. The vault, as it stars of eight ends, accuses the Muslim
influence and is work of Juan de Vallejo, s. XVI. In the choir is the
tomb of the founder of the temple, Mauricio bishop, covered
golden copper wood carving, 1260. The ashlar masonry is a masterpiece of
Felipe Bigarny (1505-1512).
