- ES MERCADAL -
As the geographical centre of the
island, its foundation is dated in the times of the Spanish Reconquering
of the Moors and its urban nucleus is concentrated around The Sant Martí
Church (Iglesia de Sant Martí) and the old mill, now changed into a
restaurant.
Along its simple but artistic streets lined by low houses, we are presented with the purest of rural towns, where people's lives flow in a natural manner, as they have always been. It is easy to explain the harmony of sensations transmitted by each corner of the town, offering us its secrets as we slowly walk through it; a visit to Cas Sucrer, the island's best homemade sweet cake shop, ordering a pair of made to fit abarcas, taste the fresh field products at the traditional cooking restaurants, another visit to the Aljub; an impressive reservoir built during the British occupation for the storage of rain water, simply discovering its secrets of the charming streets and, possibly the most exciting, reaching El Toro mountain. Disaccording to what is mentioned as a legend, its etymological origin could be Arab, meaning the highest point. One can discover, at the top, a sanctuary and a square tower dated from the 14th century, as well as a panoramic view of the island. Minorca's flatness allows the complete surface to be seen on very clear days. Es Mercadal is the ideal starting point to head for the island's main water sports centre: Fornells. Its impressive bay is considered paradise for sailing fans, especially windsurfers, as the tramontana wind force is the best propulsion for sailing in these calm waters. Sea outings to the northern beaches are organized at the port; a coastline worth visiting to discover its hidden creeks, crystal waters and rough beaches opening out to the sea. This fishing village preserves intact the Mediterranean essence, an idyllic scenery, which transmits an incomparable sense of peace. Further more, when one has the chance of tasting a lobster stew (caldereta de langosta) at the town's restaurants, the island's most esteemed dish. |
