L'Ametlla de Mar is also known as La Cala. Its inhabitants are called Caleros. Both the ancient cove of l'Ametlla and, a little to the north-east, Sant Jordi's cove were natural shelters for sailors and fishermen. The most important groups of inhabitants found here before the 20th century resided at the Pons farm house near the mountains and in a hamlet at Almadrava beach on the northern limit of the municipality.
Some of the most beautiful virgin coastline on the Mediterranean is found along the 16 km coastline of l'Ametlla. Its jagged profile includes beautiful cliffs dropping on to beaches, creeks and coves, each one with its own characteristics. Some with fine, white sand, others stony - surrounded by typically Mediterranean vegetation where the colours and scents of Nature and Sea combine to form magnificent hues.
Northern Area: Codolar del Cap de Terme, Cala Llobeta, Cala Calafat, Cala Lo Ribellet, Sant Jordi beach, Cala Vidre, Cala Forn, Cala Ampolles, Cala Mosques, Torrent del Pi beach, Cala Xelín, l'Estany Tort beach, Cala Ambrosio, Cala d'Arandes.

Southern Area: Cala Bon Capó, Cala Bon Caponet, Natural Port of l'Estany, l'Estany beach, Cala Santes Creus, Cala de la Llenya, Cala l'Estany Podrit, Cala de l'Àliga.
